Never mind the fact that this letter to the editor was published in the New York Times in 1994; 16 years later, in this time of Nature Deficit Disorder, the message is even more relevant.
The letter, from Jay S. Jacobs, President of the New York State Camp Directors Association Woodbury, was in response to NYT articles on failing schools and the benefits of summer camp. Mr. Jacobs quotes the summer camp article, which states that "for many of the millions of children who fill the bunk beds in the cabins and learn the breast stroke on the waterfront each summer, camp has not only been a breath of fresh air, but a defining experience."
