New one-week Teen Adventure: Amazing Race! camp now available July 25-30!

32 DAYS UNTIL RESIDENT CAMP!

We just added a new camp to this season's YMCA Camp: Horsethief Reservoir's Teen Adventure Series, a one-week Amazing Race! camp July 25-30!

About Amazing Race! (12-15):

This camp is the most exciting, longest scavenger/treasure hunt your child will ever go on, unless of course he or she is lucky enough to get on the TV show of the same name!

The first day is spent learning basic camping skills needed for the week and packing our equipment. Then the group receives the first clue, guiding them to an on-camp challenge. From there on, the adventure never stops!

Campers must decipher successive clues, find their route on the map (to off-camp destinations), and then complete creative physical and mental challenges to earn clues that will continue the journey. Rafting, climbing, rappelling, hiking, biking, treasure hunting, quizzing locals ... you never know what the next adventure might be!

We guarantee everyone will come home with incredible stories to tell! If you are looking for a fun-filled adventure with great opportunities for personal growth and a chance to see more of our great state, this is the camp for you!

See the TAS General Information for other camp skills taught in all TAS programs. Specific itineraries for Amazing Race camps are given to parents at check-in. We don’t want to ruin the surprise!

Since 1905, the Treasure Valley Family YMCA has been offering a traditional Resident Camp experience for the youth of Idaho. Backed by over 100 years of YMCA camping experience, we can provide an experience of a lifetime for your camper this summer!

It all begins with our staff. Most staffers are former campers who have learned through our leadership camps what it means to be a role model and who exemplify the Y’s character values of CARING, HONESTY, RESPECT and RESPONSIBILITY. Rest assured, your children are in good hands in the beautiful outdoors.

As with all Y Camp programs, campers are encouraged to meet new friends, try new activities and stretch themselves, all under the careful supervision of our camp staff. We also stress democratic living and encourage new ideas in our camp program.

Counselor-in-Training: The final step in the YMCA Resident Camp leadership program

48 DAYS UNTIL RESIDENT CAMP!

The final step for young leaders after YMCA Camp: Horsethief Reservoir's Leader-in-Training (LIT) Resident Camp is the Counselor-in-Training (CIT) camp.*

Counselor-In-Training is a Resident Camp program designed to give teens practical, hands-on experience in leadership. This program helps teens develop leadership skills that they can use throughout their lives to help others. We also help our campers identify goals and develop a plan to reach those goals. All our leadership development programs are a valuable learning experience for any teen who wants to develop and practice their leadership skills.

Our CIT program is intended for teens who aspire to be a camp counselor or work with children in the future. For those who wish to be a YMCA Resident Camp counselor, this is the transition from being a camper — when camp is all about you — to being a counselor — when you must make camp all about your campers. CITs must model and teach the YMCA values of CARING, HONESTY, RESPECT and RESPONSIBILITY. CITs learn to effectively lead and work with children and are provided an excellent foundation to become a part of our Resident Camp staff.

Those CITs who receive the recommendation of their leaders will be invited to apply for a volunteer staff position for the next summer of camp.

* CIT candidates must apply for a space in this program.

CAMP DATES:

June 20-July 2
July 11-23
August 1-13
August 8-19 (session ends on Friday rather than Saturday)

Teen Adventure: Survivor!

61 DAYS UNTIL RESIDENT CAMP!

We recently gave you an overview of YMCA Camp: Horsethief Reservoir's Teen Adventure Series, and now we're giving you a look at the individual TAS camps.

Today's feature: Survivor! (11-14)

This camp is all about wilderness survival and having fun while learning the skills it takes to do so. Fire building/starting techniques, catching food, collecting and purifying water, building/finding natural shelter, and navigation by multiple means are just some of the practical, life-saving skills campers will learn.

As the week progresses, the group is “deprived” of technology and learns to do more with less. The end goal will be to survive with a minimum of gear by using the natural resources available. Utilizing the great variety of terrain across the 400 acres of YMCA Camp: Horsethief Reservoir, campers will learn how to keep themselves safe and healthy should they ever get lost in the wilderness.

On their final night, campers will take the survival challenge with their group and an instructor. To complete the challenge, the group will build a fire to prepare dinner, collect and purify water, and create a shelter to spend the night in, all under the supervision of their instructor.

Please note: Campers will sleep outside of their tents several nights during this camp. Tarp and natural shelters are built by the group just as may be needed in a survival situation.

CAMP DATES:

June 27-July 2
July 18-23
August 8-13

Teen Adventure: Fishing Frenzy!

70 DAYS UNTIL RESIDENT CAMP!

We recently gave you an overview of YMCA Camp: Horsethief Reservoir's Teen Adventure Series, and now we're giving you a look at the individual TAS camps.

Today's feature: Fishing Frenzy! (11-14 onsite; 12-15 traveling)

Whether your child already loves to fish or is just getting interested, our camp will be the highlight of his or her summer!

Campers learn how to identify fish, choose bait/tackle/line, select a fishing spot, cast (spin casting and fly techniques taught), remove hooks and safely travel around different water bodies.

All campers will improve their fishing skills and knowledge through lessons and practice. Catch-and-release will be practiced for most of the week, but one night we’ll get the fire roaring for a good old fish fry!

Horsethief Reservoir, a stocked fish propagation reservoir (and the creek that feeds it), is the perfect setting for campers to practice all types of fishing. For the traveling camp, each day campers will visit a new spot to fish and camp in places like Cascade, Warm Lake, Deadwood Reservoir and McCall.

CAMP DATES:

July 11-16
(onsite)

Teen Adventure: Climb On!

76 DAYS UNTIL RESIDENT CAMP!

We recently gave you an overview of YMCA Camp: Horsethief Reservoir's Teen Adventure Series, and now we're giving you a look at the individual TAS camps.

Today's feature: Climb On! (11-14 onsite; 12-15 traveling)

This trip is all about climbing, and there will be no shortage of time on the rock as campers practice bouldering and top-rope climbs of varying difficulty. This camp focuses on all aspects of climbing, from safety and belay instruction through lead climbing (lead climbing is only practiced on our tower at camp). We prepare climbers to climb safely, intelligently and efficiently while enjoying the sport and all the excitement it offers. We recommend (but do not require) that campers first attend the on-site version of this camp.

On our climbing tower at camp, campers will practice belay methods, knot tying, anchor set-up, climbing/bouldering technique (physical and mental practices) and rappelling. Campers also will enjoy exploring on the many natural rock formations on our camp property.

For the traveling camp version of Climb On!, we still cover all the fundamentals of safe rock climbing but spend minimal time on our tower at camp; this group spends their time on the spectacular natural rock formations Idaho has to offer! Possible destinations for this trip include McCall, Stanley, Twin Falls, City of Rocks and spots right outside of Boise.

CAMP DATES:

June 20-25 (onsite)
July 4-9 (traveling)
August 8-13 (traveling)
August 15-19 (onsite)
